Job Summary

AIUSA’s Marketing and Communications team develops and executes creative and compelling communications strategies that leverage and build on the Amnesty brand, mobilize members and supporters, and add to the public discourse to protect and advance human rights.

The Director, Creative and Digital Communications (“Director”) is the creative strategist who leads the planning, development, and implementation of Amnesty International USA's creative content, branding, website, and social media strategy. This is a leadership position on the AIUSA’s Marketing & Communications team and reports to the National Director of Marketing and Communications. The Director will collaborate with and supervise AIUSA’s social media, creative multimedia content, and web content staff, and oversee related work provided by freelance and external agencies to develop and implement a creative and impactful digital marketing and communications strategy. This Director will be a hands-on contributor, developing new creative content and providing support for web and social media content creation and publication. This position also works closely, and collaborates, with:

  • The entire Marketing and Communications team ensures external-facing communications are aligned across AIUSA’s marketing and communications channels and across the organization;
  • AIUSA’s digital fundraising and advocacy team, which sits with AIUSA’s Development Department. This Director will coordinate strategies, content, and calendars with that team;
  • Issue experts, campaigners, organizers, members, and leaders across Amnesty International USA and Amnesty's international movement.

Essential Responsibilities

Creative & Digital Strategy Leadership

  • Lead the development and execution of AIUSA’s creative vision for web, social media, and AIUSA’s merchandise, ensuring rich and regular content aligned with brand, values, campaign, and engagement goals
  • Oversee content strategy and implementation, design, user experience, digital storytelling, and creative production across publicly facing online platforms
  • Develop, launch, and promote new digital and creative content products (e.g., video series, merchandise, newsletters) to expand and diversify AIUSA’s audience

Innovation & Organizational Alignment

  • Lead strategies to maximize ROI and integrate social media, web, creative design and multimedia work across the organization
  • Use data-driven approaches and best practices to inform tactics, strategies, format, content and design, applying IDEA principles to all marketing and communications
  • Support professional development and inclusion within the team and participate in overall department leadership

Partnerships & Development

  • Work closely with fundraising, advocacy, and campaign teams to anchor organizational priorities in all digital and creative activities
  • Lead and mentor creative and digital communications teams; set clear goals, monitor progress, and drive improvements through data and KPI tracking
  • Collaborate with partners, influencers, and artists to advance campaign impact and cultivate strong external relationships
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Strategic thinker with creative vision; skilled at translating organizational priorities into compelling storytelling and multimedia campaigns
  • Strong copywriting for digital and print; expert in producing high-impact visual and narrative content
  • Deep knowledge of industry best practices in digital content, visual design, and social media engagement
  • Proactive in spotting trends, adapting digital strategy, and leveraging new mediums to amplify mission
  • Demonstrated leadership in content, messaging, audience development, and cross-channel brand strategy
  • Data-driven in SEO, analytics, and digital marketing; uses insights to increase engagement and reach
  • Able to test, innovate, and optimize based on audience demographics and behavior
  • Excellent communicator with strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Excellent team and project management skills
  • Ability to embed inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) best practices into both strategy and operations
  • Experience supporting the professional development of staff members, with a commitment to ensure equitable access and opportunities for underrepresented identities

Education and Experience

  • BA/BS and at least 10 years relevant experience or MA/MS and 8 years relevant experience and/or sufficient relevant work experience; substantial technical knowledge of area of work
  • 3-5 years of direct people management experience preferred
  • Experience with building brand awareness and issue impact through digital advertising and audience development methods (e.g., social media, SEO, driving engagement) and strong experience with best practices
  • Experience developing digital marketing strategies and tools for advocacy or campaign organizations, international experience preferred
  • Proven track record of building an audience and driving online engagement
  • Experience developing and publishing web and social media content
  • Proficiency in Microsoft, design software (Adobe, Canva, etc.),project management software (e.g., Asana)and analytics
  • Experience working in a grassroots and/or member-based organization with shared leadership principles a plus
  • This role will require a candidate to be able to work during EST business hours as needed

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing at a desk and working on a computer

Travel Requirements, Weeknight or Weekend Work

  • Ability to travel domestically and/or internationally if required, e.g., staff retreats, member trainings/convenings, annual and regional AIUSA conferences
  • Some weeknights or weekend is required, as needed
