We are looking for a Director of Finance and Accounting. This role will work to maintain strong and rigorous internal financial management, and to support effective management and oversight of our growing portfolio of project grants. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, you will partner with executives and senior managers in strategic decision-making and financial management. You will manage RI’s accounting and bookkeeping, financial planning and analysis, strategic planning and budgeting, internal controls infrastructure, audits, tax filings, and regulatory filing. And you will partner with RI program staff to ensure effective oversight and management of project budgets. You will be able to do so in a "hybrid" work environment with 2-3 days of in-office work per week and flexibility about regular remote work.

ABOUT THE POSITION
Key areas of responsibility

Financial Planning and Budgets

  • Manage the transition of financial management from our external accounting firm back into RI;
  • Lead the annual operating budget development process in consultation with the President, Chief Administrative Officer, and senior staff;
  • Plan, implement, and maintain a budget reporting system within our accounting software (Sage Intacct);
  • Coordinate preparation of all grant contract and project budgets, as well as required budget modifications.

Accounting

  • Ensure accounting records are in accordance with GAAP, non-profit accounting principles and standards;
  • Manage accurate monitoring and recording of accounts payable, accounts receivable and cash receipts, bank and investment reconciliations, payroll activities, grant contracts, and financials and closing schedules;
  • Develop and implement effective internal accounting controls over the completeness and accuracy of all financial transactions and record keeping;
  • Manage invoice and contract payments, and recording of the transactions;
  • Implement monthly and quarterly close procedures for timely production of financial reports;
  • Manage the chart of accounts on multiple platforms (accounting system, payroll, credit cards);
  • Supervise the accounting staff, serving as back up in all functions as needed e.g. payroll;
  • Maintain up to date policies and procedures and ensure adherence to them.

Reports

  • Prepare comprehensive financial reports including multi-year modeling, liquidity assessments, cash flow analysis, and management narratives;
  • Prepare timely monthly financial close and internal financial reports for executives and project managers to ensure a shared understanding of the organization and project financial position;
  • Collaborate with project managers on analyzing financial financial reports.

Audit and 990

  • Lead the internal audit process including financial statements, schedules, and Federal Form 990.

Grant Management

  • Partner with project managers to ensure timely and rigorous management of project budgets, providing monthly updates on spend rates and advising on cost allocation;
  • Work closely with the Development team to reconcile financial records, appropriately classify donor restrictions, correctly classify and account for grants, develop accurate revenue forecasts and analysis of event revenues and expenses.
  • Establish basic financial management learning opportunities for project managers, and set expectations related to their grant responsibilities;
  • Manage all financial, program, and grant accounting and reporting functions;
  • Provide grant application budgets as required by funders;
  • Track reporting on the use of grant and other funding resources, both internally and externally.

Investments

  • Monitor endowed and restricted funds and ensure compliance with donor stipulations and investment policy.

REQUIREMENTS and EXPERIENCE WHICH WILL PROVIDE A FOUNDATION FOR SUCCESS

  • CPA or BA/BS or MA in Finance and Accounting required.
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant work experience in finance and accounting in the non-profit space,
  • Continued education to keep abreast of new accounting principles to ensure timely compliance and implementation.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

TALENTS YOU SHOULD HAVE ARE

  • Knowledge of and practice in non-profit accounting principles and standards;
  • Demonstrated experience presenting financial reports and summaries to all levels of financial literacy;
  • Talent at explaining complex finance and budget parlance to colleagues, and communicating clearly with staff in a constructive and engaging manner;
  • Adroit usage of Sage Intacct;
  • Working knowledge of Google Workspace;
  • Personal qualities of integrity, good cheer, collegiality, and dedication to the mission of Refugees International;
  • Commitment to the principles of DEIB.
