Pakistan is one of the largest refugee hosting countries in the world, providing safety to some 1.52M registered refugees and asylum seekers over decades. UNHCR supports efforts undertaken by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to provide refugee protection and assistance to refugee and asylum seekers, while strengthening social cohesion and development solutions in host communities.
The position
Within UNHCR, the role of the Development unit is to support UNHCR's engagement and cooperation with government and development partners working in Pakistan to strengthen socio-economic inclusion and self-reliance of refugees and host communities, taking into account and aimed at reducing the vulnerabilities of forcibly displaced persons. The unit is responsible to ensure that development actors are provided relevant data to inform their planning, programming and advocacy around resilience and support government inclusive policies especially on education and health.
Internship is proposed to support the work of the Development unit, working under the guidance of the Senior Development Adviser.
Duties and responsibilities
• Review available data and analyses related to Pakistan’s development landscape (e.g. SDGs, Human Development Index, relevant socioeconomic reports from various sources (government, IMF/ World bank, Bilateral donors, UN agencies, etc) and the situation of refugees
• In the context of Pakistan’s development landscape, analyse the situation of refugees using existing data sources to propose, design and write selected thematic briefs (e.g. education, health, urban, economic inclusion) and other information products that UNHCR can use in engagement with development partners
• Assist in mapping relevant stakeholders and related projects, and flag any upcoming opportunities
• Develop key facts or graphics that will facilitate Development partners to incorporate solutions for refugees and host communities into the design and implementation of their programmes
• Perform other related duties s as required.
Minimum qualifications required.
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO ; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR .
• Candidates with previous UNHCR Internship experience must not have exceeded the
maximum total cumulative full-time internship duration of eight (8) months.
Desirable qualifications and skills
• Knowledge of and/or experience with forced displacement.
• Knowledge of and experience in primary and secondary data collection, analysis, quantitative research methods and results-based management.
• Understanding of different aspects of economic growth, governance, fragility and conflict.
• Cultural sensitivity, good inter-personal skills, adoptability, and ability to work independently and in a team.
Conditions
It is a full time role with working hours starting from 08:00 am to 04:45 pm, Monday to Thursday and from 08:00 to 12:30 pm in Fridays (37.5 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Development Unit in Islamabad Country Office.
The Intern’s allowance is 501 USD equivalent to PKR 139,216.9 per month. (FLTA calculation is based on November DSA/Exchange rates.
Internships normally last two to six months with the possibility of extension up to eight months for full-time internships and twelve months for part-time internships.

Obligations
Aquiring and renewing current visas, residence permits including all associated costs, obtaining medical certification and compliance with taxation requirements (if applicable), are the responsibility of the intern.
The selected candidate will need to provide UNHCR with a proof of funding from the sponsoring institution (if applicable), health insurance coverage applicable to the assigned internship location and a certificate of good health from a qualified medical practitioner certifying their fitness for work, as well as travel. In the event the candidate is not able to produce the required certificate, they will not be admitted to the Internship Programme.
Allowance and Travel: The Sponsoring Institution shall provide non-reimbursable financial support in the form of a stipend/scholarship/allowance/etc. for the period of internship with UNHCR. Travel expenses to and from the internship location shall be the responsibility of the respective sponsoring institution. UNHCR is not responsible for any renumeration for the intern during the internship period.
